Up until recently, a chemical called DMAA was used in sports supplements. This chemical, which stands for 1, 3-dimethulamylamine, has been determined to be a serious problem,
to the point that it is now included in the National Poison Standard. The group that has made the decision to ban this ingredient in Australia is the Therapeutic Goods Administration or TGA.
The main reason that DMAA was banned does not have to do with the medication being used in sports supplements so much as its use in something called “party pills.” These pills include higher amounts of the chemical and can cause dangerous side effects. Studies show that DMAA can have such health effects as the following:
Because of the seriousness of some of these side effects, the TGA has made the decision to ban the chemical from everything, including party pills and sports supplements.
Most likely, if you do not have any side effects and you have only consumed something with DMAA in it just a couple of times, then you are most likely safe from the worrisome issues. However, if you consume DMAA regularly, you will need to see a physician. Since so many of the side effects can be serious, you need to be checked for signs of an adverse reaction to the chemical.
DMAA is a dangerous ingredient and that is why the TGA has recently decided to ban the product in Australia. There have now been enough studies to prove the danger of this additive to sports supplements. If you are currently using a supplement that contains DMAA, you need to stop as soon as possible so that you can avoid being affected by the serious side effects.
